The IMC Weekend School empowers thousands of underprivileged youth with essential life skills.
At IMC, we've always been passionate about helping young and vulnerable people reach their potential through quality education. Our commitment to supporting learning and development reflects the personal journeys of the many IMCers who've used their educational opportunities as a springboard to achieve amazing things in life.
This spirit is at the heart of one of IMC's most successful educational partnerships. Launched in 1998, IMC Weekend School has gone from strength to strength over the past 25 years. Today, more than 3,000 students participate in its weekly educational programs, which take place at more than 60 locations in over 30 communities throughout the Netherlands. That adds up to more than 300,000 hours of inspirational experiences every year!
Setting young people up for success
IMC Weekend School students typically come from disadvantaged areas or backgrounds. The program complements their regular schooling by helping them develop their talents and gain the skills and confidence they need to reach their full potential.
The core program is designed for children between the ages of 10 and 14, who are at an important stage in their development. Over the course of three years, students are introduced to a wide range of subjects – from journalism to engineering, medicine, law, entrepreneurship, and beyond.
In addition to sampling these potential career paths, the curriculum focuses on students' holistic development by providing them with practical skills they can apply in a real-world work environment. This can include anything from honing their collaboration and research skills to developing brand-new abilities across areas such as public speaking, debating, and conflict resolution.
A glimpse of the wider world
Classes are held on Sundays and are often taught by "guest teachers": enthusiastic volunteers from business and other walks of life who can give students a taste of the wider world and the opportunities it offers.
These seasoned professionals guide students through lifelike tasks that give them a sense of what it's like to be an engineer or business owner. But it's not all about work: teachers are encouraged to talk openly about their own experiences growing up and the choices they've made to provide a spark of motivation and encouragement.
Never stop growing
Over the years, IMC Weekend School has added a number of supplementary programs to its core curriculum. These include IMC Basis, where classes take place in regular schools as part of the normal school day, and IMC on Tour, which helps children from immigrant families adjust to the Netherlands through language and international transition classes.
After completing the IMC Weekend School program, students are invited to join IMC Alumni, a vibrant network of more than 3,500 members. Alumni have access to a range of training and networking opportunities. Many also become involved in shaping the next generation of IMC Weekend School students as guest teachers.
Here’s to the next 25 years!
At IMC, we're proud to support this value-added program that chimes with our focus on education and giving back to our communities. As longstanding partners, we look forward to another successful 25 years and beyond!
