At IMC, we believe in taking responsibility. That’s why we’ve developed a Roadmap to Net Zero, outlining steps to achieve net zero by 2040: a full ten years earlier than the 2050 target set by the Paris Climate Agreement.

Among many initiatives in this roadmap, from using green energy in our data centers to making sustainable food choices in our offices, we’ve also set an ambitious goal to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from our corporate travel to zero by 2040 through the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

To do this, we’ve joined forces with SkyNRG, a global leader in sustainable aviation. Since 2010, SkyNRG has been working to source, blend, and distribute SAF to airlines and corporates worldwide, and is creating partnerships to increase supply and production.

Margaux Torreilles, Partner Engagement Manager at SkyNRG, explained: “The aviation industry accounts for 2-3% of global carbon emissions, which is expected to double by 2050 if left unchecked. SAF is an alternative fuel made from waste oils and fats. The SAF sourced by SkyNRG can reduce emissions by 65-94% on a lifecycle basis compared to fossil jet fuel.”

IMC signed an agreement with SkyNRG in late 2023 to purchase SAF in proportion to its air travel emissions. SkyNRG delivered the first batch of SAF to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in Q1 2024 on behalf of IMC.

“Being able to supply the SAF to the nearest airport to IMC’s HQ maximizes carbon emission reduction potential,” Margaux continued. “From sourcing to delivery, we oversee every aspect of the fuel's journey to the airport. We meticulously track the reduction of CO2 emissions across the entire supply chain and provide IMC with a certification for its annual carbon reporting.”

As outlined in the 2024 SkyNRG Sustainable Aviation Fuel Market Outlook Report, the SAF Market is expanding, with a significant increase in announced capacity, reaching 17.3 Mt by 2030. However, many projects still face challenges, such as raising capital, construction, and commissioning.

“By signaling demand, companies like IMC are helping to stimulate the SAF market, with the aim of diversifying tech pathways for production and so accelerating the transition to more sustainable air travel,” said IMC Global Head of Group Operations, Timothy Hall.

“However, we recognize that there is also a need to champion other sustainable solutions, including reducing our air travel where possible. We will continue to monitor global developments to see how IMC can continue to help build a more sustainable model for air travel in the future.”
